Safe Learning Space

Millions of children in urban India have no quiet place to study at home. Crowded rooms, poor lighting, and constant noise steal their focus and their future. We are building community libraries and self-study centres — especially for girls — where every learner can sit, read, and dream without distraction.

The Problem

Why can't children study at home?

In low-income communities, the absence of basic study infrastructure silently undermines every educational programme.

🏡

Overcrowded Homes

Families of 5–8 live in single-room houses. There is no desk, no chair, and no corner quiet enough for focused study.

🔇

Constant Distractions

Television, siblings, household chores, and neighbourhood noise make concentration impossible during study hours.

👩‍👧

Girls Suffer Most

Girls are expected to help with housework and care for siblings. Without a separate space, their education is the first casualty.

📖

No Access to Books

Public libraries are rare in underserved areas. Children have no access to reference books, newspapers, or reading material beyond textbooks.

How It Works

From empty rooms to thriving libraries

A straightforward, community-supported 4-step model that creates safe learning environments in underserved neighbourhoods.

1

Identify the Need

Field teams survey communities, map study conditions, and identify areas with the highest dropout risk and poorest study infrastructure.

2

Secure a Space

We partner with local organisations, community halls, schools, or temple trusts to secure rent-free or low-cost rooms for conversion.

3

Set Up the Library

Each space is equipped with bookshelves, seating, proper lighting, stationery, a small reading corner, and age-appropriate books in multiple languages.

4

Sustain & Grow

Volunteer librarians manage daily operations. Monthly book drives, reading clubs, and study sessions keep the space alive and growing.

Story From the Ground
“At home, I studied on the floor next to the kitchen. Now I have a desk, a lamp, and 200 books to read.”

Safe Learning Space · Gayatri Nagar Linepar, Moradabad

Aisha is one of four children sharing a single room. When our library opened two blocks from her home, she was the first to register. She now visits every evening after school, finishes homework, and reads one book a week. Her marks improved by 30% in one term.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Safe Learning Space campaign?

It is a campaign to set up community libraries and self-study centres in underserved areas of Moradabad, giving children — especially girls — a quiet, safe place to focus, read, and grow.

How much does it cost to set up one library?

A fully equipped community library costs approximately ₹1,00,000 to set up, with ongoing maintenance of about ₹8,000 per month.

Can I donate books instead of money?

Yes. We gladly accept gently used books in English, Hindi, and Kannada — especially children's books, textbooks, and reference materials. Contact us for drop-off locations.

Can corporates sponsor a full library?

Absolutely. Corporates can sponsor an entire Safe Learning Space as part of their CSR portfolio. The space can be co-branded, and quarterly impact reports will be shared.

Who manages the libraries once set up?

Trained local volunteers manage daily operations with oversight from PFMECT field coordinators. We run monthly review cycles to ensure quality and safety standards.
