Community Learning Circles
Small groups, big gains — building reading confidence one neighborhood at a time.
Program Area: Education | Focus: Foundational Literacy
In many communities, learning gaps widen when children lack quiet study spaces and consistent support. PFMECT’s community learning circles bring together 8–12 learners with a local mentor in familiar neighborhood spaces. The small-group setting builds confidence, improves attendance, and creates a positive routine that families can sustain.
Each circle blends phonics practice, read‑alouds, and peer activities designed to help children speak up, ask questions, and enjoy reading. Parents are invited to observe sessions and receive simple activities to continue learning at home.
What we learned
- Consistency matters more than duration — shorter, regular sessions improve outcomes.
- Peer learning builds confidence faster than isolated tutoring.
- Parent touchpoints create a supportive environment beyond the circle.
In practice: We now open every cycle with a parent‑child reading hour to build trust and excitement before the weekly sessions begin.
